Norway Chess 2026: A New Era for Elite Chess in Oslo

Oslo, Norway – The anticipation is palpable as Norway Chess 2026 prepares to kick off in the heart of Oslo, marking a significant milestone in the tournament’s illustrious history. Since its inception in 2013, Norway Chess has consistently set the gold standard for elite chess, and this year promises to be no exception.

A Legacy of Excellence

Launched with the vision of uniting the world’s best chess players, Norway Chess quickly distinguished itself through its professionalism and unique venues. From the enchanting gardens of Flor & Fjære to the historic Utstein Monastery, the tournament has always been more than just a series of games; it’s a celebration of chess in stunning settings.

In 2019, the introduction of a new time control and the Armageddon playoff format injected fresh excitement into the classical games, captivating audiences and players alike. This year, the tournament takes a groundbreaking step with the debut of Norway Chess Women, the first super-tournament for women featuring equal conditions to the open section. This initiative not only highlights the tournament’s commitment to gender equality but also showcases the incredible talent of female chess players on a global stage.

Star-Studded Lineup

Norway Chess 2026 features an impressive roster of elite players, including reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju and former world champion Magnus Carlsen, who is also the defending champion. Joining them are Germany’s rising star Vincent Keymer, fresh off a victory at the Super Chess Classic in Romania, and other chess luminaries like Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu.

In the parallel Norway Chess Women tournament, fans can look forward to thrilling matches featuring world champion Ju Wenjun, defending champion Anna Muzychuk, and other top female players including Humpy Koneru and Bibisara Assaubayeva.

Tournament Schedule and Format

The dual tournaments will run from May 25 to June 5, with each round commencing at 17:00. Players will enjoy two rest days on May 29 and June 3, allowing them to recharge for the intense competition ahead.

Both tournaments will follow a double round-robin format, where each participant faces every other player twice. The prize fund is equally enticing, with the winner of each tournament taking home 700,000 Norwegian kroner (approximately €65,000), while the total prize pool reflects the tournament’s commitment to rewarding excellence.

Innovative Regulations

The time control for classical games will be 120 minutes per player, with an increment of 10 seconds starting from move 41. The Armageddon format will add an extra layer of excitement, with the player who has the white pieces in the classical game also playing white in the Armageddon. This year’s scoring system rewards victories in classical games with 3 points, while draws can lead to additional points in the Armageddon playoff.

In the event of a tie, a series of tiebreaks will ensure a clear winner, including a potential double round-robin tournament if more than two players share first place.

A Bright Future for Chess

As Norway Chess 2026 approaches, the excitement surrounding the tournament is palpable. With its commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and world-class competition, Norway Chess continues to elevate the game of chess, inspiring a new generation of players and fans alike.

Stay tuned as the world’s best chess players converge in Oslo for what promises to be an unforgettable tournament, showcasing the beauty and complexity of chess at its highest level.
