Oslo, May 28, 2026 — In a stunning display of skill and resilience, Indian chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu triumphed over World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in a gripping classical match during round three of Norway Chess 2026. The young star gradually outmaneuvered the reigning champion, maintaining control for much of the game. However, the tide turned dramatically as both players faced severe time pressure.

In a nail-biting finish, Carlsen seized what appeared to be a winning advantage, only to falter under the mounting pressure. A decisive blunder led him to resign immediately, handing Praggnanandhaa a monumental victory that will be remembered in chess history.

Meanwhile, reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju faced off against tournament leader Alireza Firouzja in another intense encounter. The two battled to a hard-fought draw in classical play, but Firouzja emerged victorious in the subsequent Armageddon game, solidifying his position at the top of the standings.

The remaining classical match between Vincent Keymer and Wesley So also ended in a draw, with So later clinching victory in the Armageddon tiebreaker. Following round three, Firouzja leads the tournament, showcasing his impressive form.

In the Norway Chess Women’s section, all three classical games concluded in draws, leading to more Armageddon drama. Reigning Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun faced Zhu Jiner in a tense battle that saw Zhu initially holding the upper hand but ultimately falling short. She later redeemed herself in the Armageddon game, securing crucial points.

Anna Muzychuk and Humpy Koneru also ended their classical match in a stalemate, with Muzychuk prevailing in the Armageddon round. In another closely contested game, tournament leader Bibisara Assaubayeva and Divya Deshmukh split points in classical play, but Divya triumphed in the Armageddon tiebreaker, narrowing the gap in the standings.

As the tournament progresses, Assaubayeva remains at the helm of Norway Chess Women, though Divya and Zhu Jiner are hot on her heels after their Armageddon victories.

With the excitement of Armageddon battles continuing, chess enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the next round of this thrilling tournament.
