Versatile Safety Ar’Darius Washington Aims to Make His Mark with the Giants

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — In the high-stakes world of the NFL, positional versatility can be a double-edged sword. For players like New York Giants safety Ar’Darius Washington, it has been both a blessing and a challenge throughout his career.

Washington, who played safety at Texas Christian University (TCU), faced a rocky start in the NFL after going undrafted in 2021. He signed with the Baltimore Ravens, where injuries plagued his early career—spending significant time on injured reserve and the practice squad. Yet, during this tumultuous journey, Washington learned the importance of adaptability, taking on multiple roles on defense and special teams.

Reflecting on his experiences, Washington shared, “Early on, I just wanted to play one position and master it. But the more you can do, the more you can get on the field.” His willingness to embrace various roles has made him a valuable asset, allowing him to contribute wherever needed.

Giants’ defensive backs coach Donald D’Alesio, who previously worked with Washington in Baltimore, praised his versatility. “He’s a chess piece,” D’Alesio said. “He can play safety, nickel, and even dime if we need him to. His mind’s wired that way, and he’s been in the system for a number of years.”

This summer, Washington has already showcased his adaptability, frequently appearing with the first-team defense. While he enjoys the flexibility, he admits that if given a choice, he would prefer to settle into the safety position. “I feel like I make a lot of plays and can help everyone when I’m at safety,” he stated.

With current nickel cornerback Dru Phillips sidelined due to a mild knee sprain, Washington is poised to step into that role, further demonstrating his importance to the team. His best season came in 2024, where he played in all 17 games for the Ravens, starting 10 and showcasing his ability to thrive in multiple positions.

Despite facing setbacks, including a torn Achilles tendon last season, Washington remains determined. Now, as one of several former Ravens under head coach John Harbaugh, he is eager to contribute to the Giants’ success. “I know what Coach is all about,” Washington said. “He’s all about winning, and I’m here to help bring that culture.”

As the Giants gear up for the upcoming season, Washington’s journey underscores the value of versatility in the NFL, proving that sometimes, the ability to adapt can be the key to success.
