Apology for Error in October Chess Life Print Edition: Louis “Lou” Giarrusso Photos Misprinted

Chess Life Magazine Apologizes for Error in October Print Edition

In a deeply regrettable turn of events, Chess Life Magazine recently issued an apology for an error in their October print edition. The mistake involved two photographs of Louis “Lou” Giarrusso appearing in a rotated and skewed format on Page 7.

The error occurred due to unforeseen circumstances surrounding Lou’s passing the night before the magazine was set to go to press. What was intended to be a celebration of his life had to be quickly reworked into an obituary.

The issue with the photos arose from the use of .heic image files, the native Apple/iOS format, which Adobe programs running on Windows machines do not reliably read or recognize. This led to the images being distorted when exported to the pdf files for printing.

Once the error was discovered, efforts were made to correct the digital version of the magazine. Additionally, a corrected pdf was made available for download for those who had not accessed the digital edition.

To prevent similar issues in the future, Chess Life Magazine has implemented a new workflow that includes converting .heic images to .jpg or .psd formats before publication.

In a statement, the magazine’s editor expressed deep regret for the oversight, particularly in the case of an obituary for a respected member of the chess community. The editor assured readers that steps would be taken to avoid such errors in the future.

Readers can download the updated pages and view the corrected images on the Chess Life Magazine website. The magazine also extended their apologies to Lou’s family for the oversight.
