Exciting Highlights from the February 12th 3 0 Thursday Tournaments: Young Talent and Record-Breaking Wins!

Young Chess Prodigy Nearly Claims Victory in Thrilling 3 0 Thursday Tournament

February 12, 2026 – In a nail-biting finish at the latest installment of the 3 0 Thursday tournament, twelve-year-old International Master Faustino Oro showcased his remarkable talent, leading the competition with nine points out of 11 games until the final moments. Despite his impressive performance, Oro ultimately settled for second place as Grandmaster Matthias Bluebaum staged a dramatic comeback to clinch the title with 9.5 points.

A Stellar Start for Oro

The first tournament of the day saw Oro defeating four grandmasters, including Bluebaum himself, as he navigated the challenging Swiss format with skill and poise. However, as the final round approached, Oro found himself trailing both Bluebaum and GM Hikaru Nakamura by half a point.

In a twist of fate, Nakamura fell to GM Denis Lazavik, while Bluebaum faced a daunting endgame against GM Dmitry Andreikin. Just when it seemed Oro might secure his first tournament victory, Bluebaum managed to salvage a lost position, winning the time scramble and ultimately finishing in first place.

Oro’s nine points were commendable, but it was not enough to claim the top spot. He edged out Lazavik on tiebreaks, while IM Polina Shuvalova continued her winning streak, taking home the women’s prize for the second consecutive week.

Bortnyk’s Dominance in the Second Tournament

The second tournament saw GM Olexandr Bortnyk bounce back after an early setback, dropping a game to GM Martyn Kravtsiv. Undeterred, Bortnyk won six consecutive games, securing his second title of the day with a final-round draw against GM Jose Martinez.

Bortnyk, renowned for his expertise in Alekhine’s Defense, demonstrated his strategic prowess, particularly in a gripping ninth-round match against IM Renato Terry, where he executed a surprising swindle under time pressure.

Nakamura finished closely behind Bortnyk with nine points, while Martinez trailed with 8.5. IM Karina Ambartsumova made headlines by winning the women’s prize for an impressive tenth time, solidifying her status as a leading contender in the tournament series.

Martinez Makes History in the Third Tournament

In the third and final tournament of the day, GM Jose Martinez emerged victorious, tying the record for the most 3 0 Thursday wins with his sixth title. The competition was fierce, with Martinez and GM Rudik Makarian locked in a two-way race. Their eighth-round draw kept the suspense alive, but Martinez entered the last round with superior tiebreaks.

Facing IM Renato Terry, Martinez secured a crucial victory, allowing him to match Terry’s record for the most 3 0 Thursday victories. Makarian, despite finishing with an undefeated score of 9.5 points, had to settle for second place, while GM Haik Martirosyan rounded out the top three with nine points. WIM Kalyani Sirin also celebrated, winning the women’s prize for the second week in a row.

The Future of Chess

The 3 0 Thursday series continues to attract top-tier talent, with a combined prize fund of $3,000 each week. As young prodigies like Faustino Oro rise through the ranks, the chess community eagerly anticipates the next chapter in their journeys. With thrilling matches and unexpected outcomes, the excitement of competitive chess remains as vibrant as ever.
