India Celebrates Chess Heritage as Torch Relay Kicks Off for Chess Olympiad

New Delhi – In a momentous occasion celebrating India’s rich heritage in chess, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of the inaugural torch relay for the Chess Olympiad, marking a historic first for the nation as it prepares to host the prestigious event. Speaking at a gathering, the Prime Minister emphasized the significance of chess, tracing its roots back to ancient India with the game of Chaturanga, which he described as a tool for developing analytical and problem-solving skills.

“Our ancestors invented games like Chaturanga for analytical minds,” Modi stated, highlighting how chess has transcended borders and become a beloved pastime worldwide. “Today, we celebrate not just a game, but a legacy that has inspired countless generations.”

The torch relay, which will travel to 75 cities across India, is part of the celebrations for the country’s 75th year of independence, known as Amrit Mahotsav. “This torch symbolizes the journey of chess from its birthplace to the global stage,” Modi added, expressing pride in India’s role as the host nation for this year’s Chess Olympiad.

Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Singh Thakur, echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments, stating, “It is a matter of pride that the Chess Olympiad will come to India for the first time, with participation from 188 nations and over 2,000 players.” He credited the Prime Minister’s leadership for the significant advancements in Indian sports, including increased funding and initiatives like Khelo India and Fit India.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed gratitude to the Indian government for initiating the torch relay tradition, which aims to popularize chess globally. “India is the fastest-growing chess country today, and we are thankful for your leadership in promoting this game,” he remarked.

The 40-day torch relay will feature prominent figures from the Indian chess community, culminating in Mahabalipuram before heading to the FIDE Headquarters in Switzerland. Alongside the relay, cultural events are planned, including an interactive bus tour and regional parades showcasing young chess talent.

India’s chess journey has been remarkable since its debut at the Olympiad in 1956, where it secured a 27th position. The nation has since won a gold medal (joint winners with Russia in 2020) and two bronze medals (2014, 2021). This year, India will field its largest contingent yet, with 20 players participating in the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad, set to take place in Chennai from July 28 to August 10, 2022.

As the torch relay begins, the excitement surrounding the Chess Olympiad builds, uniting chess enthusiasts and players across the globe in a celebration of strategy, skill, and heritage.
