Wacky Team Names and Stellar Performances at the World Team Rapid and Blitz Championship in Bengaluru

Bengaluru Hosts Wacky Chess Championship with Unlikely Team Combinations

Bengaluru – The World Team Rapid and Blitz Championship kicked off in Bengaluru, showcasing an eclectic mix of talent and humor as teams battle it out for chess supremacy. Among the standout entries is the all-Chinese team, aptly named “Dragon Chilling,” which features an intriguing blend of experience and youth: a 56-year-old five-time world champion and a 12-year-old Argentinian prodigy.

The name “Dragon Chilling” is a playful nod to the viral “Ding Chilling” meme, inspired by a 2024 World Championship match where former world champion Ding Liren was often seen sitting motionless in the players’ lounge. Team member Lei Tingjie shared that the name was chosen by team captain Ni Hua, who served as Ding’s second during the championship. The combination of the meme and the cultural symbol of the dragon reflects both humor and heritage.

As the tournament commenced from June 17-21, “Dragon Chilling” made a strong start, achieving a perfect score of 8/8 on Day 1, despite Ding suffering a loss on the top board. They share the spotlight with Team KazChess, which also finished the day with an impressive 8/8, thanks to Hungarian GM Richard Rapport’s victory over World Championship challenger Javokhir Sindarov.

American GM Hans Niemann emerged as a standout player, securing four wins in four rounds. Meanwhile, Magnus Carlsen, representing WR Chess alongside world No. 2 Fabiano Caruana, faced a mixed day with a draw against Indian GM Raunak Sadhwani and a win over veteran Vasyl Ivanchuk.

The tournament, now in its fourth edition, features a mix of amateur players and elite professionals, creating a vibrant atmosphere for chess enthusiasts. Notable participants include five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, who expressed his excitement about returning to competitive play after a hiatus.

The Rapid tournament runs until June 19, followed by the World Team Blitz Championship on June 20 and 21. With the unique team names and the blend of talent, this year’s championship promises to be both entertaining and competitive, drawing chess fans from around the globe.
