Gukesh Eyes Redemption at Norway Chess Ahead of World Championship Defense

Oslo, Norway – World chess champion D Gukesh is set to kick off his campaign at the prestigious Norway Chess tournament on Monday, a crucial opportunity for the young prodigy to regain his form ahead of his World Championship title defense later this year against challenger Javokhir Sindarov. After a season that has left much to be desired, Gukesh is determined to turn the tide in the elite competition, which features a formidable lineup including former world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen.

The tournament will take place at the iconic Deichman Bjørvika public library, overlooking the scenic Oslofjord and just a stone’s throw from the Nobel Peace Center. This year, India will be well-represented with four players: Gukesh and fellow Indian star R Praggnanandhaa in the Open category, alongside renowned women players Koneru Humpy and World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh.

However, the road ahead is fraught with challenges. Gukesh, currently ranked world No. 19, arrives in Oslo following a disappointing sixth-place finish at the Grand Chess Tour’s Super Rapid and Blitz event in Poland. Yet, he carries the weight of expectation as the player tipped to challenge Carlsen’s dominance at Norway Chess, a title the Norwegian has clinched a record seven times.

Gukesh’s recent history with Carlsen adds an intriguing layer to the tournament. Last year, he stunned the chess world with a dramatic victory over the Norwegian in Stavanger, a win that sparked Carlsen’s now-iconic table-bang in frustration. This memory could serve as a much-needed spark for the Indian teenager as he aims to regain momentum before his World Championship defense.

Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa appears to be in better form, having recently faced off against top players like Keymer, So, and Firouzja at the Superbet Chess Classic in Bucharest. His strong performances there could provide valuable momentum as he steps into the fray in Oslo.

In the women’s section, Koneru Humpy is looking to mount a serious challenge against reigning world champion Ju Wenjun. After opting out of the Candidates tournament in Cyprus due to regional conflicts, Humpy’s break from competition may prove beneficial, allowing her to arrive refreshed and mentally prepared.

The tournament format features six players in both the Open and Women’s categories, competing over 10 rounds, with each player facing every opponent twice. The unique scoring system ensures that every match produces a decisive outcome, adding an extra layer of intensity to the competition.

Kjell Madland, CEO and founder of Norway Chess, expressed excitement about the event’s new location in Oslo, aimed at expanding the tournament’s reach and popularity. “Moving the tournament to Oslo fits into our scheme of things because we are also doing Total Chess next year,” he stated.

As the chess world turns its eyes to Oslo, Gukesh and his compatriots are poised to make their mark in a tournament that promises to be both challenging and exhilarating. With the calm of Norway’s “Red Day” weekend providing the perfect backdrop, the stage is set for an unforgettable showdown among the best in the game.
