Magnus Carlsen Faces Tough Times as R Praggnanandhaa Claims Victory at Norway Chess 2026

Oslo, Norway – In a stunning turn of events at the Norway Chess 2026 tournament, Indian grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa triumphed over world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Round 3 on Wednesday, marking another significant victory in their ongoing rivalry. Praggnanandhaa described the match as a “crazy fight,” highlighting the chaotic nature of the game where neither player seemed to have full control.

Reflecting on the match, Praggnanandhaa noted the stark contrast to their previous encounter in 2024, where he felt more in command. “The last one was way better than this. I had a lot of control in that game. This one, it was just a crazy fight from the start,” he told ChessBase India.

The Indian teenager, who played with the white pieces, secured victory in 46 moves, forcing Carlsen to resign just two moves after a critical mistake on move 44. The defeat left Carlsen at the bottom of the tournament standings, a surprising position for the five-time world champion.

Carlsen’s struggles in this tournament have been evident; he had already suffered a loss to Alireza Firouzja in Round 1 and barely managed to win against Vincent Keymer in Round 2 through an Armageddon tie-break. With this latest defeat, his hopes of clinching a record-extending eighth Norway Chess title have taken a significant hit.

Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa’s performance has propelled him to second place in the standings with 4.5 points. His journey through the tournament has been mixed, having won against Wesley So in Round 1 via Armageddon but falling to Firouzja in Round 2.

Standings Update

As the tournament progresses, Alireza Firouzja leads the standings with 7.5 points, while Wesley So follows closely in third place with 4 points after defeating D Gukesh in Round 2 and Keymer in Round 3. Gukesh, currently in fourth place with 3.5 points, has also faced challenges, pushing several rounds into tie-breaks but ultimately falling short.

Norway Chess 2026 Standings After Six Rounds

  3. GM Wesley So – 4.0 points
  4. GM D Gukesh Dommaraju – 3.5 points
  5. GM Vincent Keymer – 3.0 points
  6. GM Magnus Carlsen – 1.5 points

As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on the remaining rounds to see if Carlsen can recover from this setback and how Praggnanandhaa will fare against his upcoming opponents.
