R Praggnanandhaa Triumphs Over Alireza Firouzja in Norway Chess Showdown
Oslo, June 2, 2026 – In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa secured a remarkable victory against Iranian-French GM Alireza Firouzja in Round 7 of the 2026 Norway Chess tournament. The match, which lasted 51 moves, marked a significant comeback for Praggnanandhaa after facing setbacks in his previous two games.
Praggnanandhaa, who had previously defeated world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the third round, found himself struggling after back-to-back losses against compatriot D Gukesh and Wesley So. However, on Monday, he focused on improving his time management—a crucial aspect that had hindered his performance in recent matches.
“I think it kind of went well. I was basically playing for his time,” Praggnanandhaa said after the match. “I was just making sure that I don’t get to seconds because I was making so many mistakes there.”
His strategy paid off as he played aggressively, keeping the pressure on Firouzja and ultimately avenging his earlier defeat to the 22-year-old. “Just close your eyes and make moves. That’s what I was trying to do today,” he added, reflecting on his approach to the game.
The clash between Praggnanandhaa and Firouzja was one of only two Classical games that ended decisively on Monday, highlighting the intensity of the competition. Meanwhile, Kazakstani GM Bibisara Assaubayeva also claimed victory in her match against China’s Zhu Jiner, solidifying her lead in the women’s standings.
As the tournament progresses, Praggnanandhaa finds himself tied on 9 points with Carlsen, Gukesh, and Vincent Keymer. He is now poised to further establish himself as a top contender, with an upcoming Classical match against Carlsen that promises to be a highlight of the tournament.
With his focus sharpened and confidence restored, Praggnanandhaa is ready to take on the challenge ahead, aiming for another victory that could propel him to the top of the standings.
