R Praggnanandhaa Clinches Maiden Title at Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz
Saint Louis, USA – Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has made headlines by securing his first Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz title, finishing the tournament with an impressive 23.5 points—sealing the championship with a round to spare.
The 20-year-old chess prodigy showcased remarkable skill and composure throughout the tournament, finishing ahead of Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov, a notable contender in the world championship cycle, who ended with 22 points. Praggnanandhaa’s performance on the final day was particularly noteworthy, as he did not lose any games, further solidifying his position in the Grand Chess Tour (GCT).
After a strong showing in the rapid section, where he edged out Sindarov, Praggnanandhaa faced a challenging blitz segment but managed to secure the necessary victories, ultimately achieving 11.5 points out of a possible 18. His consistent performance has propelled him to second place in the overall GCT rankings, putting him in a favorable position for the grand finale later this year.
The withdrawal of French player Alireza Firouzja from the GCT has also played to Praggnanandhaa’s advantage, as his points were removed from the standings, allowing the Indian Grandmaster to rise in the rankings.
