Stavanger, Norway – In a stunning display of skill and composure, Indian Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa triumphed over reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen in a thrilling classical match during Round 3 of the Norway Chess tournament on Wednesday. This victory marks a significant milestone in Praggnanandhaa’s burgeoning career.

The match unfolded with Praggnanandhaa gradually applying pressure on the Norwegian chess titan, maintaining control for much of the game. However, the tide turned dramatically during a tense period of time trouble, where Carlsen briefly seized the upper hand. Just when it seemed the five-time world champion might turn the tables, he made a critical blunder that led to his immediate resignation.

Following the match, an elated Praggnanandhaa took to social media platform X to express his excitement. “Happy to have played out a crazy fighting game against Magnus. Fortunate to have come out on top. Looking forward to play more fighting games!” he wrote, reflecting on the intensity of the encounter.

Gukesh Draws; Firouzja Maintains Lead

In another notable clash, reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju faced off against tournament leader Alireza Firouzja. The match concluded in a hard-fought draw, but Firouzja later triumphed in the Armageddon tie-break, securing additional points and solidifying his position at the top of the standings.

The third classical game of the round saw Vincent Keymer and Wesley So also end in a draw. So managed to defeat Keymer in the subsequent Armageddon, earning a crucial bonus point. After three rounds, Firouzja remains firmly in the lead following another successful outing in Stavanger.

Norway Chess Women’s Tournament

In the parallel Norway Chess Women’s tournament, all three classical games ended in draws, leading to tense Armageddon tie-breaks. Women’s world champion Ju Wenjun and Zhu Jiner played a gripping match that ended in a stalemate after Zhu missed a promising winning opportunity. However, Zhu rebounded to claim victory in the Armageddon game, earning valuable points.

Anna Muzychuk also emerged victorious in Armageddon against Humpy Koneru after their classical game ended level. Divya Deshmukh pulled off an impressive win against tournament leader Bibisara Assaubayeva in Armageddon, following another drawn classical match.

Despite her defeat, Assaubayeva retained her lead in the women’s standings, though Divya and Zhu narrowed the gap with their crucial victories.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the upcoming rounds, where players will continue to vie for supremacy in this prestigious chess event.
