Yuffa and Gledura Secure Victories, Intensifying Title Race at Prague Chess Festival
Yuffa and Gledura Win, Remain in the Fight for the Title
As the Prague Chess Festival approaches its thrilling conclusion, the Challengers tournament is heating up. With just one round remaining, the race for the top spot remains wide open. Vaclav Finek, who has held the lead since round three, saw his advantage shrink to a mere half-point after Daniil Yuffa clinched his second consecutive victory in Thursday’s eighth round.
Finek, currently leading the standings with 5.5 points, faces a crucial match against Thomas Beerdsen in the final round. Meanwhile, Yuffa is hot on his heels with 5 points, set to clash with Jachym Nemec, who, along with top seed Benjamin Gledura, is just half a point behind Finek.
The stakes couldn’t be higher as the players prepare for their decisive matches. Finek will don the black pieces against Beerdsen, while Yuffa will also play black against Nemec. Gledura, who has been steadily climbing the ranks, will face Surya Shekhar Ganguly with the black pieces as well.
A Battle of Endgames
In the penultimate round, Finek faced a daunting endgame against Ganguly. With an unusual material balance—Finek holding a rook, bishop, knight, and three pawns against Ganguly’s queen and six pawns—he was forced to defend meticulously. Despite engine analysis suggesting several paths for Ganguly to press his advantage, Finek showcased remarkable resilience, ultimately securing a draw.
On the other hand, Gledura demonstrated his prowess by converting a slight advantage against Stepan Hrbek. In a complex position featuring two knights for both sides, Gledura effectively coordinated his pieces, capitalizing on an extra pawn to claim victory.
Yuffa’s win came against second seed Jonas Buhl Bjerre, who adopted a speculative positional approach that backfired. Bjerre overlooked a critical pawn sacrifice early in the middlegame, allowing Yuffa to seize the initiative and maintain control throughout the game.
Standings After Round 8
- Vaclav Finek – 5.5 points
- Daniil Yuffa – 5 points
- Benjamin Gledura – 4.5 points
- Jachym Nemec – 4.5 points
As the tournament reaches its climax, all eyes will be on the final round. Can Finek hold onto his slim lead, or will Yuffa or Gledura seize the opportunity to claim the title? The chess world waits with bated breath for what promises to be an electrifying conclusion to the Prague Chess Festival.
