Pranav Venkatesh Triumphs in June 12 Freestyle Friday Championship, Surpassing Oleksandr Bortnyk in Standings

Pranav Venkatesh Triumphs in Freestyle Friday Championship, Surges Ahead in Standings

In a thrilling display of skill and resilience, Grandmaster Pranav Venkatesh emerged victorious in the latest installment of the Freestyle Friday Championship held on June 12, 2026. Despite facing setbacks in the second and fourth rounds, Venkatesh rallied to win all his remaining matches, securing first place outright and surpassing fellow Grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk in the championship standings.

The Freestyle Friday Championship, a key qualifier for the upcoming 2027 Freestyle World Championship, has recently undergone changes to its qualification process, intensifying the competition. With only two weeks left for Bortnyk to reclaim his position, the stakes have never been higher.

Venkatesh’s journey to the top was not without its challenges. After a rocky start, he showcased his strategic prowess, finishing the tournament with an impressive score of 9 points. His performance was closely followed by GM Dmitry Andreikin, who secured second place after a tiebreaker on 8.5 points, edging out FM Artin Ashraf and GM Conrad Holt.

The tournament kicked off with a fierce competition, where only two players—GMs S.L. Narayanan and Marco Materia—remained undefeated after the first break. Materia notably upset the nine-time Freestyle Friday champion Bortnyk, propelling himself to a perfect 4/4 score.

As the rounds progressed, the tension mounted. Materia maintained his winning streak until he faced Andreikin, who managed to capitalize on a critical advantage. Meanwhile, Venkatesh steadily climbed the ranks, ultimately facing Andreikin in a decisive final round.

In a dramatic conclusion, Venkatesh faced IM Abtin Atakhan, who posed a significant threat. However, Venkatesh’s strategic acumen shone through, leading to a checkmate by move 37. Atakhan’s loss allowed Venkatesh to solidify his lead, while Andreikin’s victory over Sarana kept him in contention.

WGM Afruza Khamdamova also made headlines, clinching the women’s prize with a commendable score of 7.5/11, while GM Anna Muzychuk maintained her lead in the women’s standings despite not participating this week.

As the Freestyle Friday Championship continues to unfold, all eyes will be on Venkatesh and Bortnyk as they vie for the top spot in the standings. With only two weeks remaining, the competition promises to be fierce as players prepare for the next round of battles.
