Pranav Venkatesh Makes India Proud by Winning World Junior Chess Championship

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, India’s Pranav Venkatesh emerged victorious at the World Junior Chess Championship (Under-20) held in Petrovac, Montenegro. The young chess prodigy secured the title after a draw against Slovenia’s Matic Levrencic in the final round, finishing the tournament without a single defeat.

Venkatesh, who had previously won the challengers section at the Chennai International, continued his impressive form on the global stage, accumulating nine points out of a possible 11 with seven victories and four draws. The final round pairings worked in his favor, as a draw was enough to clinch the championship.

Facing Levrencic’s Sicilian defense, Venkatesh made a bold move early on by sacrificing a pawn to gain a developmental advantage. Despite the Slovenian player opting for a cautious approach, the game ended in a draw after just 18 moves, securing Venkatesh’s position at the top of the leaderboard.

Legendary Indian chess player Viswanathan Anand congratulated Venkatesh on his outstanding achievement, praising his meticulous approach to the game and dedication to improvement. Anand himself had won the World Junior Championship in 1987, with other Indian players like P Harikrishna and Abhijeet Gupta following suit in later years.

Venkatesh’s victory marks a significant moment for Indian chess, as the country celebrates the return of the World Junior Championship title after nearly 17 years.
