Pranesh M Triumphs in Freestyle Friday Championship: A Stellar Performance and Qualification for World Championship
GM Pranesh M Triumphs at Freestyle Friday Championship
June 26, 2026 – In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Grandmaster Pranesh M achieved a remarkable victory at the Freestyle Friday Championship, finishing with an impressive score of 10.5 out of 11 after starting the tournament with a perfect 9/9. This win marks Pranesh’s first victory of the year and his fourth overall in the series, as the first half of the Freestyle Friday Championship (FFC) draws to a close.
The tournament saw fierce competition, with GM Dmitry Andreikin finishing in second place with 9.5 points. Andreikin showcased his prowess by reaching 4/4 before the first break, including a decisive win against NM Ethan Sheehan. Meanwhile, GM Oleksandr Bortnyk opted to compete in the Bullet Chess Championship, allowing GM Pranav Venkatesh to secure a qualifying spot for the 2027 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship.
Pranesh’s journey through the tournament was nothing short of exhilarating. After defeating Andreikin in the fifth round—the only loss he would suffer—Pranesh continued to dominate, ultimately opening a full-point lead against GM Volodar Murzin in round seven. His perfect run continued against GM Alexey Sarana in round eight, solidifying his position at the top.
In the final round, Pranesh faced GM Nodirbek Yakubboev, while Andreikin battled Murzin. With the standings lead, Pranesh skillfully navigated his game toward a draw, ensuring his victory in the tournament. Yakubboev, under time pressure, made a critical mistake, allowing Pranesh to secure his win.
The tournament concluded with GM Parham Maghsoodloo taking third place with 8.5 points, while GM Alexey Sarana and Murzin rounded out the top five.
Pranesh’s victory not only earned him a prize of $400 but also doubled his standings score, placing him eighth among the remaining FFC players. GM Anna Muzychuk, who had already qualified for the Women’s Championship, won the women’s prize for good measure.
The Freestyle Friday Championship continues to showcase the best in chess, with the second half set to begin in September. As players gear up for the next round, all eyes will be on Pranesh, who has proven himself a formidable contender in the world of Freestyle Chess.
