FIDE Addresses Concerns Over Cyprus Candidates Tournament: “Safety and Contingency Plans in Place”

FIDE Addresses Concerns Ahead of Candidates Tournament in Cyprus

As the highly anticipated Candidates tournament approaches, set to commence on March 28 in Cyprus, concerns surrounding safety and infrastructure have been brought to the forefront. American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura recently voiced his apprehensions regarding power outages on the island, prompting a swift response from FIDE, the global governing body of chess.

The tournament, which runs until April 16, will determine challengers for the world chess titles in both the open and women’s sections. However, the backdrop of ongoing conflicts in West Asia has led to heightened security concerns, with Indian chess veteran Koneru Humpy even withdrawing from the event due to perceived risks.

In response to Nakamura’s comments on social media platform X, FIDE reassured participants that power conditions in Cyprus are stable. “Power shortages in Cyprus are very rare and typically short-lived,” the organization stated, referencing a recent incident where outages lasted only minutes. They emphasized that the tournament venue, Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort, is equipped with backup generators to ensure a continuous power supply throughout the event.

FIDE further reiterated that Cyprus remains a safe destination for visitors. Despite earlier missile strikes on a military base on the island, the organization affirmed, “There is no emergency situation, and the country continues to operate normally.” They also highlighted that the hotel has shelter facilities as a precautionary measure, ensuring the safety of all participants.

“FIDE has contingency plans in place, as with any major international event,” the organization noted. “We remain ready to respond promptly to any changes in circumstances, with the safety and comfort of players, officials, media, and guests as the top priority.”

As the chess world gears up for this prestigious tournament, FIDE’s commitment to safety and preparedness aims to quell fears and ensure a successful event in Cyprus.
