The chess world is abuzz with anticipation as reigning champion D Gukesh prepares to defend his title against rising star Javokhir Sindarov in the 2026 FIDE World Chess Championship. Following Sindarov’s impressive victory at the FIDE Candidates in Cyprus last month, many experts are leaning towards the Uzbek prodigy as the early favorite. However, Gukesh’s past triumphs on the global stage cannot be overlooked.
In a recent interview at the Superbet Chess Classic Romania, where he is the defending champion, fellow Indian grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa weighed in on the highly anticipated showdown. Despite Sindarov’s recent surge and Gukesh’s mixed form, Praggnanandhaa believes the match is too close to call.
“It’s six months away, and no one knows what form they will be in. I think it’s just 50-50. I don’t think anyone is a favorite. It’s just who plays the best in the World Championship will take it,” he stated, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of high-stakes chess.
The two competitors have already faced off multiple times this season, with Gukesh narrowly defeating Sindarov in the rapid section of the Superbet Rapid and Blitz Poland event. However, Sindarov made a strong comeback in the blitz format, winning two games against the world champion.
Yet, Sindarov’s momentum took a hit when he suffered a surprising defeat to Praggnanandhaa in the second round of the Superbet Chess Classic, marking his first loss in classical chess since September of the previous year.
As the chess community eagerly awaits the championship match, the stakes couldn’t be higher. With both players showcasing their skills in recent tournaments, fans are left wondering who will emerge victorious in this epic clash of titans.
Stay tuned for more updates as the countdown to the championship continues!
