In a thrilling turn of events, GM Aleksandra Goryachkina and IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul emerged victorious in the penultimate round of the 2025 Monaco FIDE Women’s Grand Prix, catching up with leader GM Kateryna Lagno. Lagno, who made a quick draw against GM Koneru Humpy, now finds herself in a three-way tie for first place.

GM Tan Zhongyi also kept her hopes alive by defeating IM Bibisara Assaubayeva, staying half a point behind the leaders along with Humpy. Meanwhile, GM Harika Dronavalli secured her first win of the event by defeating GM Alexandra Kosteniuk, climbing out of last place.

With the ninth and final round set to start one hour earlier on Thursday, February 27, at 8 a.m. ET / 14:00 CET / 6:30 p.m. IST, the tension is palpable as the top players battle it out for first place. The round-eight results have set the stage for an intense final round, with five players still in contention for the top spot.

Goryachkina’s impressive performance, winning three games after an initial loss, has put her in a strong position going into the final round. Munguntuul, who has been a revelation in Monaco after a tough outing in the previous Grand Prix, also finds herself in the mix for first place.

As the players gear up for the final showdown, the competition is fierce and the stakes are high.
