Vijayawada: Excitement Builds as SAAP League Chess Event Kicks Off in Tirupati

The Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) is set to launch its much-anticipated State-level chess event of the SAAP League at the Sri Srinivasa Sports Complex in Tirupati on February 21. With 360 talented players ready to compete across four age categories, the event promises to be a thrilling showcase of skill and strategy.

This inaugural chess competition marks the beginning of a year-long series of sporting events that will culminate with basketball on December 26, 2026. The SAAP League aims to foster athletic talent across the state, featuring a total of 31 sports disciplines, including five beach sports, three para sports, and three masters’ disciplines.

The enthusiasm for chess in Andhra Pradesh was evident during the district-level trials held on February 17, where a remarkable 2,445 players from 26 districts vied for a spot in the state competition. After a rigorous selection process, 360 players emerged victorious, qualifying in the Under-19, Under-17, Under-15, and Under-13 categories.

Designed for athletes aged 12 to 20, the SAAP League emphasizes mass participation and high-quality competitive exposure. The competition structure includes intra-district trials followed by inter-district league events, ensuring that young athletes gain valuable experience throughout the year.

Two-time Women’s World Rapid Chess Champion Koneru Humpy expressed her excitement about the event, stating, “I am delighted to see such large participation from across Andhra Pradesh. Competitive platforms like the SAAP League provide young players with the experience and confidence needed to excel at higher levels. I wish all participants the very best.”

S. Bharani, Vice-Chairperson and Managing Director of SAAP, highlighted the initiative as a reflection of the state government’s commitment to structured and inclusive sports development. “The SAAP League is designed to nurture talent and provide opportunities for young athletes to shine,” he said.

As the chess pieces are set to move on February 21, the anticipation builds not just for the competition, but for the future of sports in Andhra Pradesh. With the SAAP League paving the way for aspiring athletes, the state is poised to become a powerhouse in sports excellence.
