Tirupati, February 21, 2026 — The Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) Leagues 2026 State-level chess tournament commenced with great enthusiasm on Saturday, drawing attention from chess enthusiasts across the state. The event was inaugurated by a distinguished panel including former Union Minister Panabaka Lakshmi, A.P. Handicrafts Development Corporation Chairman Pasupuleti Hari Prasad, SAAP Chairman A. This year’s tournament saw an impressive turnout, with 2,445 participants competing in district-level trials across 26 districts. After rigorous competition, 360 talented players qualified for the state-level showdown, which is being held across four age categories: under-19, under-17, under-15, and under-13.

The tournament is set to conclude on Sunday with a medal ceremony honoring the winners in all categories. Speaking at the inauguration, Ms. Panabaka Lakshmi emphasized the importance of such sporting initiatives, stating, “These events build discipline, resilience, and leadership among young minds. Chess not only enhances strategic thinking but also strengthens the character of the players.”

Mr. Pasupuleti Hari Prasad echoed her sentiments, highlighting the transformative role of structured sports in shaping confident and capable youth. “The scale and seriousness of this league reflect our commitment to nurturing talent,” he said.

SAAP Chairman A. Ravi Naidu and Vice-Chairperson S. Bharani added, “The depth of district participation demonstrates that our sports culture is expanding meaningfully. SAAP remains dedicated to building credible platforms that identify, nurture, and elevate talent across age groups. I extend my gratitude to all stakeholders, parents, and the district sports authority for their overwhelming support.”

As the tournament unfolds, it promises to not only showcase the strategic prowess of young chess players but also to foster a vibrant sports culture in Andhra Pradesh, paving the way for future champions.
