Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Brings Hope to Alexandra’s Youth with Chess and Sports Gear
ALEXANDRA, Gauteng – In a heartwarming initiative aimed at fostering a safer and more constructive environment for learners, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni visited Realogile Secondary School on Thursday. The visit included the donation of a large floor chess set, sports gear, and a table tennis set, marking a significant step towards engaging youth in positive activities.
The event, supported by the Department of Sports in collaboration with Afrika Tikkun, launched a new chess programme designed to sharpen young minds, instill discipline, and promote critical thinking. Mthombeni emphasized the importance of such initiatives in steering youth away from crime. “We know that the chess project is stimulating young minds. It also keeps them busy and away from the clutches of crime,” he stated, urging students to embrace these opportunities.
During his address, Mthombeni called on local police and the Adopt-a-Cop programme to provide ongoing support to the school, particularly in addressing issues like break-ins, substance abuse, and vandalism. “Crime is our common enemy,” he declared, stressing the need for united action from communities, stakeholders, and law enforcement.
Councillor Adolph Marema praised the chess initiative as a powerful tool for youth development, highlighting its role in promoting critical thinking and discipline. “It is a powerful initiative that uses chess to promote critical thinking, discipline, and youth development,” he remarked.
The event also saw expressions of gratitude from School Governing Body chairperson Aubrey Mudau, who welcomed the donations and support. “As a school, we are on a perpetual pursuit of excellence, and partnerships made today will go a long way in achieving our objectives,” he said, hopeful that this initiative would be a catalyst for further positive developments.
Mthombeni’s visit not only brought essential resources to the school but also ignited a sense of community spirit, as stakeholders like the Guardian Angel Wildlife and Marine Trust and the Community Policing Forum were recognized for their commitment to creating safer, healthier environments for the youth.
As the event concluded, Mthombeni expressed his hope that today’s initiative would inspire many more positive changes in the community. “May today’s event be the catalyst for many good things to come,” he said, leaving students and staff with a renewed sense of purpose and optimism.
