Eastern Cape Schools Prepare for Severe Weather Conditions: Safety Measures and Closures Announced

Severe Weather Alerts Prompt School Closures in Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape, South Africa – May 5, 2026 – The Eastern Cape Department of Education has issued a stern warning to schools across the province in anticipation of severe weather conditions, leading to the suspension of classes in several coastal municipalities. This precautionary measure comes as forecasts predict disruptive snowfall and damaging coastal conditions beginning May 6 and lasting for several days.

In a media statement released today, the department confirmed that a memorandum had been dispatched to all nine education districts, alerting them to the South African Weather Service’s predictions of Level 5 disruptive snow and Level 6 damaging waves along the coast.

Areas Affected by Closures

As a result of the severe weather warnings, schooling has been suspended in the following coastal municipalities:

  • Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality
  • Kouga Municipality
  • Kou-kamma Municipality
  • Sundays River Valley

Officials emphasized that the decision to close schools was made with the safety of learners and staff as the top priority, given the potential risks associated with the impending weather conditions.

Snow Expected in Inland Areas

Inland regions are also bracing for snowfall, with areas such as Jamestown, Elundini, Senqu, and Walter Sisulu identified as likely to be impacted. While no blanket closures have been announced for these areas, schools have been advised to remain vigilant and implement necessary safety precautions.

Urgent Safety Measures

Sharon Maasdorp, Head of the Department, urged school management teams, parents, educators, and learners to take the weather warnings seriously. “Safety must come first,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for the adverse conditions ahead.

The department is committed to closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates should conditions worsen or further disruptions become necessary. School governing bodies and labor organizations have already been informed of the developments.

Weather Expected to Persist

The severe weather conditions are anticipated to persist until at least May 9, raising concerns about travel safety, school access, and potential disruptions to learning in affected areas. Residents, particularly those in high-risk zones, are urged to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay informed through official communication channels.

As the Eastern Cape braces for this weather event, the safety of students and staff remains the foremost concern, with the department taking proactive measures to ensure their well-being.
