India’s young chess prodigy, Shubhi Gupta, has once again made her mark on the international stage by clinching the girls U-16 gold and girls U-20 bronze medals at the Commonwealth Chess Championships in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. The Women FIDE Master and reigning U-19 girls’ national champion displayed exceptional skill and determination throughout the tournament, securing a total of eight points out of a possible nine in the U-16 category.

Shubhi’s impressive performance saw her outclass her competitors, including fellow Indian players Mrittika Mallick and Yashvi Jain, who finished in second and third place respectively. In addition to her success in the U-16 category, Shubhi also showcased her competitive spirit by competing in the Open category against seasoned Grandmasters, International Masters, and Women Grandmasters.

Reflecting on her achievements, Shubhi expressed her joy at being able to perform consistently in both categories and credited her previous successes, including winning the Commonwealth U-12 title and the World Cadet Championship, for boosting her confidence. The young talent from Ghaziabad, who was introduced to chess by her father, has consistently delivered outstanding performances on both national and international platforms.

Shubhi’s latest triumph at the Commonwealth Chess Championships has not only earned her accolades but also a prize purse of Rs 1 lakh. Her dedication, passion, and talent continue to inspire aspiring chess players across the country, solidifying her reputation as one of India’s brightest chess stars.
