Javokhir Sindarov Triumphs in Titled Tuesday as Spring Split Kicks Off

March 3, 2026 — In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, GM Javokhir Sindarov emerged victorious in the latest edition of Chess.com’s Titled Tuesday, marking the beginning of the spring split for the 2025-26 season. Sindarov’s decisive win over fellow Grandmaster Nihal Sarin in the final round secured his place at the top, as he triumphed in tiebreaks after co-leaders GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and GM Dmitry Andreikin opted for a quick draw.

This victory marks Sindarov’s second win in just four weeks and his third of the year, placing him ahead of all competitors, including the legendary GM Magnus Carlsen, who did not participate in this round.

A Competitive Landscape

The tournament kicked off with 16 players, all vying for supremacy. Sindarov, Vachier-Lagrave, and GM Hikaru Nakamura each started strong, winning their first four matches. However, it was Nakamura who handed Sindarov his first defeat, utilizing the Scandinavian Defense to secure a comfortable victory.

As the rounds progressed, Vachier-Lagrave and Sindarov both advanced to 7/7, setting the stage for intense matchups. Vachier-Lagrave’s victory over GM Denis Lazavik led to a highly anticipated clash with Nakamura, where Vachier-Lagrave ultimately triumphed, solidifying his position in the tournament.

The Final Showdown

Entering the final round, Sindarov faced Sarin, who was also in contention for the top spot. In a bold move, Sindarov sacrificed his queen, leading to a complex material imbalance. As the game unfolded, Sindarov’s strategic prowess shone through, allowing him to capitalize on Sarin’s weakened kingside pawns. With a decisive endgame, Sindarov secured the win, finishing with a score of 9.5/10.

With the tiebreaks calculated, Sindarov emerged as the champion, edging out Andreikin and Vachier-Lagrave, who took second and third place, respectively.

Standings and Future Prospects

Sindarov’s victory awarded him the first 10 points of the spring split, placing him firmly at the top of the standings. The full standings revealed a competitive field, with GM Arjun Erigaisi finishing fourth and GM Nikolas Theodorou rounding out the top five.

As the tournament concluded, Sindarov took home a prize of $1,000, while Andreikin and Vachier-Lagrave received $750 and $350, respectively. The excitement of Titled Tuesday continues to captivate chess enthusiasts, with the next tournament scheduled for March 10.

For those who missed the live broadcast, a recap featuring GM David Howell, WFM Maud Rodsmoen, and CM Jon Kristian Haarr is available for viewing.
