Sindarov Takes Down Pragg to Join Caruana at the Top of the Candidates
NAGPUR – In a thrilling display of strategy and skill, World Cup champion Javokhir Sindarov triumphed over India’s rising star Praggnanandhaa R, securing his place alongside Fabiano Caruana at the top of the Candidates Tournament standings. The dramatic clash unfolded in the third round, marking a pivotal moment in the competition.
Sindarov, known for his bold tactics, sacrificed his knight for two pawns early in the game, a move that initially left Pragg with a material advantage but ultimately turned the tide. By the 13th move, Sindarov’s daring strategy had displaced Pragg’s king, setting the stage for a complex battle that would keep spectators on the edge of their seats.
The game remained tense for the next 18 moves, with both players navigating a labyrinth of possibilities. However, a critical mistake from Pragg on the 33rd turn shifted the advantage back to Sindarov. As time pressure mounted, the young Indian Grandmaster fell into Sindarov’s carefully laid trap, suffering his first defeat in 40 moves.
Meanwhile, Fabiano Caruana showcased his prowess against China’s Wei Yi, clinching victory in just 19 moves. A blunder from Wei on the 17th turn allowed Caruana, the world No. 3, to seize a decisive advantage, making him the first player to take the lead in the tournament.
The day was not kind to the Chinese contingent, as all three players faced defeat. In a more measured contest, Germany’s Matthias Bluebaum and Russia’s Andrey Esipenko played to a draw after 41 moves, while Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Giri also ended their English Opening clash in a stalemate.
In the women’s section, Kazakhstan’s 22-year-old prodigy Bibisara Assaubayeva stunned world No. 4 Zhu Jiner of China, taking the lead with a masterful performance. Employing the Canal Attack of Sicilian Defence, Assaubayeva executed key moves on the 25th and 31st turns, ultimately prevailing after 43 moves.
Ukrainian-born Russian GM Kateryna Lagno joined Assaubayeva at the top after a rollercoaster victory over 2017 Women’s World Champion Tan Zhongyi. Their 54-move battle was fraught with opportunities and mistakes, showcasing the unpredictable nature of high-stakes chess.
India’s Vaishali Rameshbabu, the lowest-ranked candidate, continued her impressive run with a third consecutive draw, holding World Championship finalist Anna Muzychuk to a stalemate in a flawless display of the Italian Game. The match concluded in a 41-move draw, demonstrating Vaishali’s resilience.
