Celebrating the Legacy of GM Daniel Naroditsky: Highlights from the 2026 Naroditsky Memorial in Charlotte
Chess Community Unites in Charlotte to Honor GM Daniel Naroditsky
Charlotte, NC – From July 3-5, the vibrant city of Charlotte became a chess mecca as top grandmasters, content creators, and enthusiastic fans gathered to celebrate the legacy of the late Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky. The inaugural Naroditsky Memorial, a tribute to Naroditsky’s passion for rapid and blitz formats, featured thrilling competitions that showcased the best of the chess world.
The highlight of the event was the remarkable performance of GM Javokhir Sindarov, who emerged victorious in both the rapid and blitz tournaments. Sindarov, the next world championship challenger, demonstrated his prowess by overcoming a tough loss to GM Andy Woodward, ultimately scoring an impressive 6 out of 7 in the rapid tournament. His final-round victory against GM Aydin Suleymanli propelled him into a tie for first place, leading to a decisive blitz playoff where he triumphed 2-0.
In a stunning display of skill, IM John Bartholomew dominated the Creator Invitational, finishing with a perfect 9-0 record. The round-robin blitz tournament featured ten well-known chess content creators, with Bartholomew’s performance leaving little room for competition. His closest rival, IM Levy Rozman, acknowledged the challenge but couldn’t quite catch up.
The event also served a noble purpose, raising funds for the Daniel Naroditsky Memorial Fund, which aims to support young chess talents through the Naroditsky Fellowship. Contributions from attendees and online supporters will help sustain this annual event and provide scholarships for aspiring players.
Rapid Championship Highlights
Sindarov’s journey in the rapid tournament was marked by resilience. After a setback against Woodward, he needed a win against Suleymanli to secure his spot in the playoffs. The pressure was palpable, but Sindarov delivered, tying for first with GM Aravindh Chithambaram before clinching the title in the blitz playoff.
Creator Invitational
The Creator Invitational turned into a showcase of Bartholomew’s talent, as he swept through the tournament without losing a single game. Rozman, who documented his experience through videos, came closest to challenging Bartholomew but ultimately fell short.
Blitz Tournament and Masters Finals
The blitz tournament featured unexpected twists, including a sibling showdown between Sindarov and his brother. GM Hikaru Nakamura faced early struggles but rebounded to secure a spot in the finals, where he faced fierce competition from nine other grandmasters and NM Ethan Sheehan.
Sindarov’s performance in the Masters Finals was nothing short of spectacular. After a slow start with a draw, he surged ahead, finishing with an impressive score of 7.5 out of 9. His victory against Woodward was particularly noteworthy, showcasing his tactical brilliance.
In a heartfelt post-match interview, Sindarov reflected on his long-standing friendship with Naroditsky, reminiscing about the countless games they played together.
A Legacy Honored
The 2026 Naroditsky Memorial not only celebrated the life of a beloved chess figure but also fostered a sense of community among players and fans alike. With a total prize fund of $50,000 and a format that included rapid and blitz tournaments, the event was a fitting tribute to Naroditsky’s love for the game.
As the chess world looks forward to future events, the legacy of Daniel Naroditsky will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations of players.
