Uzbek Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov Reflects on His Playing Style After Winning 2026 Candidates Tournament

CYPRUS – In a stunning display of skill and strategy, 20-year-old Uzbek Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has emerged victorious at the 2026 Candidates Tournament, securing his place in the upcoming FIDE World Chess Championship. Following his triumph, Sindarov made headlines with bold comparisons of his playing style to legendary figures in chess, notably Garry Kasparov, while also expressing a nuanced view of Magnus Carlsen.

In a video interview shared by FIDE, Sindarov described himself as a “very dynamic player” who thrives in challenging positions on the board. “From this, I’m close to Kasparov,” he stated, acknowledging the former world champion as his idol. “Kasparov can play every position very well, probably he’s like my idol. Even Carlsen, he is a very strong player, but I feel like at some positions he doesn’t like where he played. Probably I didn’t meet Carlsen at his best, so that’s why I feel like this right now.”

Sindarov’s comments have sparked debate among chess enthusiasts, prompting the question: Which legend does his style resemble more closely? His assertion that he feels more aligned with Kasparov’s aggressive and complex approach, while downplaying Carlsen’s style, has raised eyebrows in the chess community.

Sindarov’s GOAT: Magnus Carlsen

Despite his comparison to Kasparov, Sindarov made it clear that he still considers Magnus Carlsen the greatest of all time. When asked about the ‘GOAT’ of chess, he stated, “It’s Carlsen, in my opinion. Carlsen says it’s Kasparov, but I say it’s Carlsen.” This acknowledgment of Carlsen’s prowess, coupled with his earlier remarks, paints a picture of a young player who is both confident and respectful of the legends who came before him.

Sindarov’s performance at the Candidates Tournament was nothing short of extraordinary. He finished with 10 points, the highest score recorded by a winner in modern Candidates history, and did not lose a single match throughout the competition. His remarkable consistency allowed him to clinch the title with one round to spare.

As he prepares for the Grand Chess Tour, where he will ironically replace D. Gukesh—who withdrew to focus on training—Sindarov’s journey is just beginning. With his sights set on the World Championship match later this year, the chess world eagerly anticipates what this rising star will achieve next.
