Hikaru Nakamura’s Prophetic Tweet: Javokhir Sindarov Compared to Magnus Carlsen

Uzbekistan Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has captured the chess world’s attention after his stunning victory at the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026. The young prodigy’s meteoric rise has drawn comparisons to some of the game’s greatest players, including Magnus Carlsen. Interestingly, this comparison was made five years ago by none other than chess superstar Hikaru Nakamura.

In July 2021, after witnessing Sindarov’s remarkable performance against Alireza Firouzja in the FIDE World Cup, Nakamura took to social media to express his admiration. He tweeted, “The very impressive play by the young Javokhir Sindarov… reminded me a lot of the play by a young @MagnusCarlsen in his match against @LevAronian from the FIDE World Cup in Libya back in 2004!” At the time, Sindarov was just 15 years old and ranked 121st in the world, yet he managed to pull off a shocking upset against Firouzja, a top contender.

Sindarov’s victory in that match was not just a fluke; it showcased his exceptional talent and composure under pressure. After both players drew their classical games, Sindarov triumphed in the tiebreaks, knocking out the higher-rated Firouzja and becoming an overnight sensation. Nakamura’s comparison to Carlsen was particularly poignant, as it echoed the young Norwegian’s own struggles against seasoned opponents at a similar age.

The match Nakamura referenced took place in 2004, when a 13-year-old Carlsen faced off against Aronian in the FIDE World Chess Championship. Although Carlsen ultimately lost, his fighting spirit and tactical prowess left a lasting impression on the chess community, much like Sindarov’s recent performances.

Sindarov Set to Challenge D Gukesh

Fast forward to 2026, and Sindarov has not only won the FIDE Candidates Tournament but has also earned the right to challenge India’s D Gukesh for the World Chess Championship title later this year. His victory at the Candidates follows a triumphant run at the FIDE World Cup in Goa the previous year, solidifying his status as a rising star in the chess world.

In a historic parallel, another Indian player, R Vaishali, has also made headlines by winning the FIDE Women’s Candidates 2026. She will challenge China’s Ju Wenjun for the women’s world title, marking a significant milestone for Indian chess.

As Sindarov prepares for his championship match, the chess community is abuzz with excitement. Hikaru Nakamura’s five-year-old tweet now appears prophetic, as the young Grandmaster continues to draw comparisons to the legendary Magnus Carlsen. The chess world eagerly awaits to see if Sindarov can live up to the expectations and carve his own legacy in the annals of chess history.
