D Gukesh to Kick Off 2025 Campaign at Tata Steel Chess Tournament After Becoming World Champion

Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh, who recently made history by becoming the youngest-ever world chess champion, is all set to kick off his 2025 campaign at the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament in the Netherlands on January 17.

The 18-year-old Grandmaster clinched the world championship title by defeating defending champion Ding Liren in a thrilling match in Singapore last month. The game reached a crucial point in the fourteenth round when a massive blunder by Liren led to his resignation, paving the way for Gukesh’s historic victory.

Following his remarkable win, Gukesh received widespread praise from the chess community, with former and current players lauding his achievement. However, the young champion also faced criticism from some quarters, including world-renowned players Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik.

Singapore’s youngest Grandmaster Siddharth Jagadeesh, who has known Gukesh since their early days in under-age tournaments, shared an interesting anecdote about the new world champion. Recalling a match in an u-9 tournament where Gukesh offered him a draw out of mercy, Jagadeesh highlighted Gukesh’s sportsmanship and talent from a young age.

Looking ahead, Gukesh is gearing up to face off against chess legends Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen in the upcoming Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 tournament in Germany in February. He will also participate in the Norway Chess 2025 tournament in May, where he will once again go head-to-head with Carlsen.
