Oslo, Norway – June 1, 2023 – In a thrilling day of chess at the ongoing Norway Chess tournament, World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen delivered a stunning blow to tournament leader Alireza Firouzja, while American grandmaster Wesley So surged to the top of the standings with a crucial victory over Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.

Carlsen, playing with the white pieces, showcased his strategic prowess in a tense match against Firouzja. After building pressure throughout the game, he skillfully converted his advantage in the endgame, marking Firouzja’s first classical defeat of the tournament. This pivotal win not only tightens the standings but also reignites the competition at the top.
