Gukesh Faces Setback at Menorca Masters 2026 as Nihal Sarin Claims Victory

Menorca, Spain – In a stunning turn of events at the Menorca Masters 2026, reigning World Champion D Gukesh suffered a significant setback, falling to compatriot Nihal Sarin in the third round. Gukesh, a two-time champion, arrived in Menorca with high hopes, but his current form tells a different story.

The match began with promise for Gukesh, but troubles emerged early on. By the ninth move, he made a questionable decision, retreating his queen to c7 instead of opting for a queen exchange. This misstep handed the initiative to Sarin, who quickly capitalized on the opportunity. The Kerala-based grandmaster activated his dark-squared bishop with a decisive Bf4, followed by an aggressive e4 pawn push, establishing central control and mounting pressure on Gukesh.

Sensing the momentum shift, Sarin intensified his attack with Bg6, targeting Gukesh’s bishop and destabilizing his defensive structure. Under mounting pressure, Gukesh faltered again, playing Qd7 in a desperate attempt to hold his position. Sarin responded with precision, striking with e5 to dislodge Gukesh’s knight on f6 before capturing the active light-squared bishop. At this juncture, the game tilted firmly in Sarin’s favor, with evaluation engines indicating a significant advantage of +1.71.

Fully aware of Gukesh’s resilience, Sarin left nothing to chance. Once he seized control, he tightened his grip, advancing his h-pawn and launching a coordinated kingside assault. Gradually, Gukesh’s position deteriorated, with his pieces tied down and counterplay non-existent. By move 34, with no viable defense remaining, Gukesh resigned, marking his first loss of the tournament after earlier draws against Leinier Domínguez Pérez and Ruslan Ponomariov.

For Sarin, the victory capped a strong start to the tournament. Having previously defeated Pentala Harikrishna and drawn with Domínguez Pérez, he surged to the sole lead with two points from three rounds. The contrasting trajectories of India’s young chess stars are now hard to ignore. While Sarin continues to rise steadily in classical chess, improving his rating and consistency, Gukesh is experiencing a rare slump following his ascent to the summit as world champion.

As the tournament progresses, it remains to be seen how Gukesh will respond to this setback. In fact, Menorca could be among the last few marquee events he plays this year, as the Chennai grandmaster has opted to scale back his schedule in preparation for his title defense later in 2026. As part of that strategy, he has also withdrawn from the Grand Chess Tour.

The chess world will be watching closely as both players navigate their contrasting paths in the coming rounds of the Menorca Masters.
