US Chess Opens Applications for the Herbert B. Jacklyn Program: A Legacy of Support for Young Players
In a heartfelt tribute to the late Dr. Herbert B. Jacklyn, the United States Chess Federation (US Chess) has announced the opening of applications for the 2026-2027 Herbert B. Jacklyn Program. This initiative, funded by Dr. Jacklyn’s generous bequest, aims to empower chess players aged 18 to 21 by providing them with the resources necessary to enhance their skills and pursue their passion for the game.
Dr. Jacklyn, a passionate advocate for chess, expressed his desire that the income generated from his gift be used to further the chess capabilities of young players. “It is my wish and desire that the United States Chess Federation use this gift to establish a fund in my name,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the next generation of chess talent.
The application process is now open, with a deadline set for August 1, 2026. US Chess aims to support players who may lack the economic resources to access coaching and instruction independently. The program will provide financial assistance to both individual players and teams, with individual awards capped at $1,000 and team awards at $1,500.
