SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Suffolk County’s student-athletes are making headlines this season, showcasing their talents across various sports and competitions. From impressive track performances to a strong start in football and a remarkable chess achievement, these young athletes are setting the bar high.

Bay Shore Track Stars Compete Nationally

Bay Shore’s track and field athletes recently took their skills to the national stage, competing in two prestigious indoor competitions. Limel Smalls showcased his talent in the triple jump at the Nike High School Indoor National Championships, while Maggie McCormick made waves at the New Balance High School Indoor Championships. McCormick’s exceptional performances earned her All-American honors, placing fourth in the 2-mile and sixth in the 1-mile events.

Huntington Flag Football Team Off to Historic Start

The Huntington girls varsity flag football team is making history with an undefeated start, boasting a 2-0 record. The Blue Devils secured a thrilling 13-6 victory over Bay Shore, following a dominant 12-0 win against Kings Park in their season opener. Quarterback Khi Casey connected with Ariana Zavala for two touchdown passes, while the ground game, led by Anabella Rafailan and Mikiyla Blizzard, added crucial rushing yards.

Defensively, Huntington shone with standout performances from Kymora Dorvilus, who recorded 11 flag pulls, and Izabelle Colato, who intercepted a pass and returned it for 20 yards. Coach Malcolm Eugene praised the team’s defensive prowess, highlighting their ability to create pressure and turnovers. Rafailan’s all-around contributions earned her the MVP title for the game.

In their opener against Kings Park, Huntington dominated with a balanced offensive attack, rushing for 189 yards and limiting their opponents to just three first downs.

Deer Park’s Chess Prodigy Shines at State Championships

In the realm of chess, Deer Park High School freshman Max Yevsyukov has made a name for himself by earning third place in his division at the 58th annual New York State High School Chess Championship. Yevsyukov’s dedication to the game has not only enhanced his strategic skills but has also contributed to his academic and personal growth.

“Max was very excited about this tournament, and we are very proud of him,” said guidance counselor Rachel Glaubach, reflecting the pride of the Deer Park community in Yevsyukov’s achievements.

As Suffolk County’s student-athletes continue to excel in their respective fields, their accomplishments serve as a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the supportive communities that rally behind them. With more competitions on the horizon, these young stars are poised to achieve even greater heights.
