Super Chess Classic: Praggnanandhaa Maintains Joint Lead with Draw Against Keymer

Praggnanandhaa Stays in Joint Lead After Draw with Keymer at Super Chess Classic

Bucharest – Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa showcased his resilience in the third round of the Super Chess Classic, part of the prestigious Grand Chess Tour, by drawing with Germany’s Vincent Keymer. This result keeps Praggnanandhaa in a tie for the lead, alongside several formidable competitors.

After a commendable victory over Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov in the previous round, Praggnanandhaa now boasts two points from three games. He shares the top spot with French GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Dutch talents Jorden Van Foreest and Anish Giri, as well as Keymer, creating a competitive atmosphere with half of the ten-player field in contention.

In a match that saw both players demonstrating their strategic prowess, Praggnanandhaa, playing with the white pieces, opted for the Capablanca variation against the Nimzo-Indian Defense. Keymer, known for his consistent performances, sacrificed a pawn early on to level the playing field. The game progressed into a rook and minor piece endgame, where Praggnanandhaa’s extra pawn was effectively neutralized by Keymer’s impeccable blockade, leading to a draw after 64 moves.

Anish Giri made headlines by securing his first victory of the tournament against Alireza Firouzja. Choosing the King’s Indian Defense, Giri established a strong position that culminated in a minor piece sacrifice from Firouzja, showcasing Giri’s tactical acumen.

Meanwhile, Jorden Van Foreest continued to impress, defeating local star Deac Bogdan-Daniel in another King’s Indian encounter, demonstrating superior handling of complex positions.

The remaining two matches of the day ended in draws, with Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So unable to break the stalemate, while Sindarov managed to hold Vachier-Lagrave to a draw, recovering from his earlier loss.

The Super Chess Classic features a total prize pool of $350,000, with $100,000 earmarked for the tournament winner. As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on the players as they vie for supremacy in the coming rounds.
