Praggnanandhaa Set to Face Firouzja in Super Chess Classic Opener

In an exciting kickoff to the Super Chess Classic, Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa is poised to take on rising star Alireza Firouzja in the opening round of the prestigious tournament. This event marks the first classical tournament of the year on the Grand Chess Tour calendar, and with a total prize purse of USD 350,000, it promises to be a thrilling competition.

Following the withdrawal of reigning world champion D Gukesh from this year’s classical events, Praggnanandhaa stands as the sole Indian representative in the elite 10-player round-robin format. The young prodigy has received a favorable draw, playing with the white pieces in five of the nine rounds—a potential advantage in a fiercely competitive field.

Praggnanandhaa enters the tournament eager to bounce back after a disappointing performance at the Candidates Tournament in April, where he finished 16th in the live world rankings. His first challenge against Firouzja, a formidable opponent, will set the tone for what he hopes will be a stronger showing.

The tournament features top-tier talent, with Fabiano Caruana, the top seed from the United States, facing off against in-form Dutch Grandmaster Jorden van Foreest. Van Foreest recently made headlines by defeating world number one Magnus Carlsen at the TePe Sigeman Chess Tournament and is currently ranked 20th in the world.

With Gukesh’s exit, the vacant spot in the event was filled by Uzbek sensation Javokhir Sindarov, who has quickly emerged as a dominant force in the chess world. Sindarov, known for his prowess in complex positions, will begin his campaign against Romania’s Deac Bogdan-Daniel. His recent triumph at the Candidates Tournament has set high expectations for his performance in this event.

In another exciting matchup, Anish Giri of the Netherlands will take on Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, while German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer is set to face Wesley So of the United States.

For Praggnanandhaa, the upcoming rounds look promising, with key games against elite players such as Wesley So, Caruana, Vachier-Lagrave, and Keymer. His highly anticipated clash with Sindarov is scheduled for the second round, where the Uzbek player will have the advantage of the white pieces.

As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on Praggnanandhaa to see if he can reclaim his winning rhythm against some of the best in the game.

Round 1 Pairings:

  • Praggnanandhaa vs Alireza Firouzja
  • Maxime Vachier-Lagrave vs Anish Giri
  • Deac Bogdan-Daniel vs Javokhir Sindarov
  • Wesley So vs Vincent Keymer
  • Jorden van Foreest vs Fabiano Caruana

Stay tuned for what promises to be an exhilarating start to the Super Chess Classic!
