Super Chess Classic: Praggnanandhaa Held to Draw as Firouzja Withdraws Due to Injury
Praggnanandhaa Held to Draw as Firouzja Withdraws from Super Chess Classic
In a dramatic turn of events at the Super Chess Classic, part of the prestigious Grand Chess Tour, Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa faced Romanian Deac Bogdan-Daniel in a tense match that ended in a draw. Meanwhile, French prodigy Alireza Firouzja made the difficult decision to withdraw from the tournament due to an ankle injury, leaving the competition wide open.
Firouzja, who had bravely played two rounds despite his injury, announced his withdrawal on the rest day of the ten-player, nine-round tournament. His exit proved beneficial for Germany’s Vincent Keymer, who gained a walkover victory and extended his lead to a full point, now sitting at 4.5 points.
While all other matches concluded in draws, Keymer’s advantage places him ahead of a tightly packed group that includes Holland’s Jorden Van Foreest, Anish Giri, top-seeded American Fabiano Caruana, and Praggnanandhaa, all tied at 3.5 points.
Despite being the lowest-ranked player in the tournament, Deac Bogdan-Daniel showcased his resilience against Praggnanandhaa. The Indian Grandmaster opted for the Stonewall Dutch opening, aiming for complications right from the start. However, Deac matched Praggnanandhaa’s moves with precision, leading to a series of trades that ultimately resulted in a draw after 68 moves.
In another notable match, World Championship challenger Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan, who recently won the Candidates Tournament, struggled to find his footing. He played to a draw against Caruana, marking his fifth consecutive draw in the tournament, leaving him still searching for his first win.
The tournament, boasting a total prize pool of $375,000 with $100,000 earmarked for the winner, still has three rounds remaining. As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on Keymer as he seeks to maintain his lead and secure victory.
