D Gukesh Finishes Sixth in Grand Chess Tour’s Super Rapid and Blitz Tournament; Hans Niemann Claims Title

[Location] – In a thrilling conclusion to the Super Rapid and Blitz tournament, part of the prestigious Grand Chess Tour, reigning world champion D Gukesh finished in sixth place, while American prodigy Hans Moke Niemann showcased remarkable composure to clinch the title.

Gukesh, who opted to participate solely in the rapid and blitz segments of the tour this season, wrapped up the event with a total of 17 points from 36 possible across nine rapid and 18 blitz rounds. His performance included nine points from rapid games and eight from blitz, demonstrating his skill in both formats.

Despite a challenging tournament, Gukesh ended on a high note, defeating Polish grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the final round. This victory allowed him to secure a mid-table finish, a positive outcome considering the fierce competition he faced.

The youngest-ever world champion had previously faced setbacks, including a key defeat against Javokhir Sindarov, who edged their head-to-head encounters 2-1 throughout the tournament. Nevertheless, Gukesh’s resilience shone through as he also notched victories against notable players like Wesley So and Niemann on the last day of competition.

Meanwhile, Niemann’s impressive performance culminated in a total of 22.5 points, allowing him to secure the championship and the top prize of USD 50,000. His final two victories, including a decisive win against Radoslaw Wojtaszek, solidified his position at the top of the standings.

Following Niemann were Fabiano Caruana in second place with 22 points, and Wesley So in third with 21 points. Vladimir Fedoseev and Alireza Firouzja rounded out the top five, finishing with 18 and 17.5 points, respectively.

As the Grand Chess Tour transitions to its next event in Bucharest, Romania, all eyes will be on Gukesh, who is set to face Sindarov again later this year and will also compete in the highly anticipated Norway Chess tournament.

Final Standings:

  1. Hans Moke Niemann (USA) – 22.5
  2. Fabiano Caruana (USA) – 22
  3. Wesley So (USA) – 21
  4. Vladimir Fedoseev (Slovenia) – 18
  5. Alireza Firouzja (France) – 17.5

    7-9. Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Poland), Javokhir Sindarov (Uzbekistan), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave – 16.5 each
