Abhishek Sharma Misses Team India’s Delhi Training Session Due to Illness

NEW DELHI: Team India opener Abhishek Sharma was notably absent from the squad’s first training session in New Delhi on Tuesday, as he battles an illness that has raised concerns about his availability for the upcoming match against Namibia. Reports from Cricbuzz indicate that Sharma is suffering from stomach issues, leaving his participation in the crucial game uncertain.

The 25-year-old had a rocky start to the tournament, dismissed for a golden duck in the opening match against the USA. His struggles continued as he did not take the field during the USA innings, with wicketkeeper Sanju Samson stepping in for him, further fueling speculation about his fitness.

Adding to the worries, Sharma was seen leaving a team dinner hosted by coach Gautam Gambhir early, which only heightened concerns regarding his health. Mohammed Siraj, after the USA match, confirmed that Sharma was dealing with an “upset tummy,” assuring fans that he would recover soon. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah also missed the USA game due to illness, highlighting a challenging period for the team.

With a high-stakes clash against Pakistan looming on February 15, the management may opt to rest Sharma to ensure he is fully fit for that encounter. Should he be sidelined, Sanju Samson could be called back to open the batting, providing him with much-needed match practice.

Sharma is regarded as a vital player for India, known for his explosive batting style and a T20I strike rate nearing 200. Despite his initial setback against the USA, the team management remains optimistic about his swift return, recognizing the impact he can have at the top of the order.

In the opening match against the USA, India secured a 29-run victory, bouncing back from a batting collapse. Captain Suryakumar Yadav shone with an impressive unbeaten 84, while Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh led a strong bowling performance to clinch the win.

As fans await updates on Sharma’s condition, the team is focused on maintaining momentum ahead of their next challenge.
