St. Louis, MO – After a well-deserved rest day on Sunday, the 2026 U.S. Junior and Senior Championships resumed Monday, captivating spectators with 11 decisive games and one thrilling lead change.

Girls’ Junior Championship: Tang Takes Over

In a stunning turn of events, WGM Zoey Tang seized the lead in the Girls’ Junior Championship, winning her fifth consecutive game. Her victory came against IM-elect Rose Atwell, one of the tournament’s highest-rated competitors, allowing Tang to leapfrog over pre-round leader WIM Rachael Li, who suffered her first loss of the tournament at the hands of WGM Iris Mou.

With Tang’s impressive performance, the stakes have dramatically shifted. Previously, it seemed Tang would have to choose between playing for a win as Black or settling for a draw, but now it’s Li who must scramble to regain her footing.

WGM Rochelle Wu also made her mark by defeating WIM Chloe Gaw, contributing to a day filled with excitement and unexpected outcomes.

Junior Championship: Mishra Survives Scare

In the Junior Championship, GM Abhimanyu Mishra managed to hold onto his half-point lead against GM Andy Woodward in a highly anticipated clash. Mishra employed a novel strategy in the Semi-Slav defense, successfully navigating through complex positions to secure a draw.

Despite Woodward’s missed opportunities to push for a win, the only decisive game of the round came from GM Kirk Ghazarian, who triumphed over IM Evan Park, further shaking up the standings.

As the tournament progresses, Mishra and IM Tanitoluwa Adewumi remain tied for second, just half a point behind the leader.

Senior Women’s Championship: Setting the Stage

In the Senior Women’s Championship, co-leaders WGM Anjelina Belakovskaia and WFM Natalya Tsodikova continued their winning streaks, both sitting atop the leaderboard with 4½/5 scores. Their upcoming face-off in Round 7 promises to be a highlight of the tournament, as both players have dominated previous editions of the U.S. Senior Women’s Championship.

In the Senior Championship, GM Vladimir Akopian continues to impress, winning all five of his games without a single draw. His latest victory came against GM Gregory Kaidanov, solidifying his position at the top.
