Teen Titans of Chess: Young Stars Dominate 3 0 Thursday Tournaments

In a stunning display of skill and strategy, three teenagers emerged victorious in the 3 0 Thursday tournaments held on May 21, marking a significant shift in the competitive chess landscape. None of the winners—FM Artin Ashraf, GM Denis Lazavik, and Pranesh M—have even reached the age of 20, yet they outplayed their more seasoned opponents, showcasing the rising talent in the chess world.

First Tournament: Ashraf Surpasses Top Seeds

The day kicked off with FM Artin Ashraf making headlines by clinching first place in the first tournament. With a FIDE rating of 2470, Ashraf is on the brink of achieving the Grandmaster title, and his performance in this tournament only solidified his reputation.

In a thrilling eighth-round match against GM Bardiya Daneshvar, Ashraf demonstrated his attacking prowess, winning a crucial pawn early on and converting the advantage into a victory. Heading into the final round, IM Aleksandr E Usov led the event with 8.5 points, but Ashraf’s determination shone through as he defeated Usov, finishing with a total of 9/11. His tiebreak score edged out GM Jonas Buhl Bjerre, who also finished with 9 points, while Usov settled for third.

Second Tournament: Lazavik Wins Wild Finish

The second tournament saw GM Denis Lazavik take the crown with an impressive score of 10/11. Lazavik’s journey to victory was anything but straightforward. After a flawless sixth-round game that earned him a perfect Game Review score, he entered the final round half a point ahead of his closest rivals.

The last match against Daneshvar was a rollercoaster, with both players experiencing moments of dominance. However, Lazavik’s speed and tactical acumen in the time scramble ultimately secured him the win and the tournament title. Following him were GM Haik Martirosyan in second place with nine points and GM Cristobal Henriquez in third with 8.5.

Third Tournament: Pranesh Best Among Equals

In the final tournament of the day, Pranesh M showcased his resilience, finishing first despite conceding five draws. His undefeated score of 8.5/11 placed him ahead of IMs Yoseph Theolifus Taher and Anthony Atanasov, whom he bested on tiebreaks.

Pranesh’s decisive victories included a standout performance in round three against FM Havard Haug. The seventh round featured a unique pairing between IMs Eric Rosen and Irene Sukandar, a married couple, which added a personal touch to the competitive atmosphere. Rosen humorously navigated the emotional complexities of playing against his spouse, ultimately securing a win in a back-and-forth battle.

A New Era in Chess

The 3 0 Thursday tournaments, a series of three weekly Swiss events for verified titled players, continue to attract top talent with a combined prize fund of $3,000 each week. With the emergence of these young champions, the chess community is witnessing a new generation of players ready to challenge the status quo.

As the chess world watches closely, one thing is clear: the future of chess is bright, and these teenage titans are just getting started.
