Caruana Wins Massive U.S. Masters, Six Norms Earned in Charlotte
Thanksgiving weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina was filled with excitement as the U.S. Masters chess tournament took place, drawing amateur, expert, and professional players from around the world. Organized by the Charlotte Chess Center, the event has become a staple in the chess community, attracting top-rated players and offering the opportunity to earn prestigious norms.
Last year’s edition of the U.S. Masters was already a success, but this year’s event surpassed all expectations. With a 30% increase in attendance, a total of 264 players competed in the Masters, with an additional 473 players participating in the NC Open. The field was incredibly strong, with 47 grandmasters, 51 international masters, and 35 FIDE masters in attendance.
The highlight of the tournament was the participation of world number two, GM Fabiano Caruana. Caruana’s presence added a new level of excitement to the event, as spectators were eager to see how he would perform in an open tournament setting.
In the end, Caruana emerged victorious, finishing with an impressive 8/9 score. His performance earned him $7,500, a trophy, and valuable FIDE Circuit points. The tournament also saw strong performances from Greek GM Nikolas Theodorou, who finished in second place, and Uzbek GM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova, who tied for third.
Aside from the top finishers, six players also earned norms during the tournament. Gunnar Andersen and FM Avi Kaplan earned international master norms, while IMs Tianqi Wang, Evan Park, Mark Heimann, and Isik Can earned grandmaster norms.
The U.S. Masters in Charlotte was not only a showcase of top-level chess but also a platform for players to achieve their norm aspirations. The event’s success and the high level of competition bode well for the future of chess in Charlotte and beyond.
Congratulations to all the participants and organizers for another successful U.S. Masters tournament!
