Creating TD TIPs for the 5th Edition Rulebook: A Look Back at the Process

US Chess Releases 5th Edition Rulebook with New TD TIPs

In 2002, US Chess embarked on the task of updating its rulebook, which had not seen a new edition since 1993. Tim Just and Dan Burg were appointed as editors for the 5th edition rulebook, which aimed to incorporate all the new rules, procedures, and policies that had been implemented over the past decade.

The editors worked closely with a committee of volunteers to compile a list of updates and enhancements for the new rulebook. One of the innovative ideas that emerged from this collaboration was the introduction of TD TIPs – practical tips for Tournament Directors to help them better understand and apply the rules in real-world situations.

TD TIPs are not rules themselves, but rather suggestions that aim to unlock the secrets of the rulebook and provide practical guidance for TDs and players alike. The editor, in this case, Tim Just, takes input from various sources, including delegates, to ensure that the TIPs are relevant and helpful.

One interesting proposal that has been floated is the idea of publishing the TIPs in a separate volume from the rules. This raises the question of whether chess players would be willing to purchase both volumes or if having them together in one source book would be more convenient.

Overall, the release of the 5th edition rulebook with the addition of TD TIPs marks a significant step forward in making the rules of chess more accessible and understandable for all players and Tournament Directors.
