Magnus Carlsen Wins Titled Tuesday Again, Jaime Santos Claims First Victory

Chess fans were treated to an exciting Titled Tuesday event on August 20, with GM Magnus Carlsen making a triumphant return to the winner’s circle after a couple of near misses in previous weeks. Carlsen, who had previously scored a perfect 11/11 and finished second twice, claimed victory in the late event with 9.5 points.

The early tournament saw GM Jaime Santos Latasa emerge victorious, also with 9.5 points, marking his first win ever in Titled Tuesday. Meanwhile, GM Jeffery Xiong replicated Carlsen’s feat from the previous week by finishing as the runner-up in both events.

Santos put on a stellar performance in the early tournament, winning nine out of ten games and only conceding a draw to GM Dmitry Andreikin. However, his final round loss to GM Hikaru Nakamura made for a tense finish, with tiebreaks ultimately favoring Santos.

In the late tournament, roles were reversed from the previous week, with Xiong finishing second and Carlsen taking the top spot. Despite not losing a game, Xiong’s early draw put him at a disadvantage, allowing Carlsen to secure the win with a score of 9.5 points.

With these impressive performances, Carlsen reached 190 points in the Titled Cup standings, becoming only the second player to achieve this milestone. Xiong and Andreikin are close behind, making for an exciting race in the upcoming events.

Overall, it was a thrilling day of chess with top players showcasing their skills in the Titled Tuesday events. Fans can look forward to more intense competition in the weeks to come as the battle for the Titled Cup continues.
