18th NYC Chess Norms Invitational Recap: IM Kyron Griffith Earns Second GM Norm, FM Samrug Narayanan Achieves Final IM Norm
The 18th NYC Chess Norms invitational recently took place at the Marshall Chess Club, with IM Kyron Griffith and FM Samrug Narayanan achieving impressive milestones in their chess careers. Griffith earned his second GM norm with a stellar performance in the GM A section, while Narayanan crossed the 2400 FIDE threshold and earned his final IM norm.
Griffith’s victory in the GM A section was highlighted by his crucial win in the second round, propelling him to the GM norm. Meanwhile, Narayanan showcased his skills with a solid performance throughout the tournament, culminating in his final IM norm.
Other notable performances included IM Robert Shlyakhtenko’s impressive win over a grandmaster and Narayanan’s strategic victory over Putnam. Despite the focus on norm earners, there were plenty of exciting games played by all participants, showcasing the depth of talent at the event.
In the IM B section, IM Mykola Bortnyk emerged victorious, while Bryan Enming Lin crossed the 2300 FIDE threshold and earned his FM title. GM Michael Rohde, IM Justin Sarkar, and FM Joshua Colas were the top scorers in the Scheveningen C section, with GM Andrew Tang and IM Josiah Stearman leading in the Scheveningen D section.
Overall, the 18th NYC Chess Norms invitational was a success, with a total of 46 norms achieved. Organized by IO Keith Espinosa and arbitrated by FA Greg Keener and FA Carlos Chavez, the event showcased the talent and dedication of the participants.
