Javokhir Sindarov Clinches FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 Title, Sets Stage for Epic World Championship Showdown with D Gukesh

NEW DELHI: In a stunning display of skill and composure, Uzbek Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has emerged victorious in the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026, securing the title with a round to spare. His remarkable journey culminated at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort, where he remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, showcasing a blend of strategic brilliance and tactical finesse.

Sindarov’s decisive moment came during a tense match against renowned player Anish Giri, where a composed draw confirmed his qualification for the World Championship, even before the final round. This pivotal result not only solidified his position at the top of the standings but also set the stage for an electrifying clash against reigning champion D Gukesh later this year.

The tournament kicked off with Sindarov’s impressive victory over Andrey Esipenko in Round 1, setting a confident tone for his campaign. From there, he built momentum with a series of controlled performances, expertly balancing solid defense with timely aggression. Even in challenging positions, Sindarov displayed maturity beyond his years, consistently staying ahead of his competitors.

His ability to dominate opponents—whether through decisive victories or crucial draws—proved to be the defining factor of his campaign. A steady stream of half-points, including a strategic draw against Matthias Bluebaum in the later rounds, kept him firmly in control of the standings. With one round still to play, Sindarov’s lead became unassailable, underscoring the dominance of his performance.

As he prepares to face Wei Yi in the final round, the outcome will not affect his top position, allowing him to focus on the upcoming World Championship. The tournament, boasting a substantial prize pool of €700,000 (approximately Rs 7.6 crore), rewards both consistency and brilliance, and Sindarov excelled in both aspects.

The winner of the Candidates Tournament not only takes home €70,000 but also earns the coveted right to challenge for the biggest prize in chess. All eyes are now on the anticipated World Championship, where Sindarov will take on Gukesh in what promises to be a thrilling battle between two of the brightest young stars in the game.

As the chess world buzzes with excitement, fans eagerly await this monumental showdown, marking a new chapter in the sport’s history.
