Team USA Dominates at 2026 World Senior Team Championship, Secures Gold Medals in 50+ Section
In a thrilling display of strategic prowess and teamwork, both official USA teams clinched gold medals in the 50+ section of the 2026 World Senior Team Championship. Team USA emerged victorious with an impressive score of 7½ out of 9, securing their top position ahead of Italy based on tiebreaks.
The championship, held in a competitive atmosphere, saw Team USA’s men’s squad showcase their skills with six wins and three draws, ultimately solidifying their dominance in the tournament. The team, featuring renowned Grandmasters Jaan Ehlvest, Alexander Shabalov, Gregory Kaidanov, and Igor Novikov, along with alternate IM Stuart Rachels, proved their mettle against formidable opponents.
Meanwhile, the Team USA Women also made headlines by finishing as the top women’s team in their section, achieving a score of 5 out of 9. Their performance included four wins, two draws, and three losses, placing them a half-point ahead of strong contenders from the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan. The women’s team featured returning stars such as WGM Anjelina Belakovskaia and reigning U.S. Senior Women’s champion WFM Natalia Tsodikova, alongside WIM Beatriz Marinello, WFM Olga Sagalchik, and alternate WFM Ivona Jezierska.
This victory marks Team USA’s fourth consecutive gold medal in the men’s section and the women’s team’s third consecutive medal, with this being their first gold. Notably, WIM Dr. Alexey Root, a former team member, had predicted this success, emphasizing the team’s upward trajectory and their quest for gold after previous silver and bronze finishes.
As the tournament progressed, Team USA faced tough competition, notably pulling ahead in Round 6 with a decisive 2½–1½ victory over Hungary. Despite a challenging draw against Kazakhstan in Round 7, the team rebounded in Round 8, defeating England-3 4–0, which set the stage for their final match.
In the concluding Round 9, Team USA secured the gold with a strategic draw against Iceland, while Italy managed a narrow win over Norway. With superior tiebreaks, Team USA celebrated their hard-earned victory, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in senior chess.
