Criticism and Support Surrounding D Gukesh’s World Chess Championship Victory

The chess world was left in awe as 18-year-old D Gukesh clinched the World Chess Championship title with a stunning victory against defending champion Ding Liren. The match, which went down to Game 14, saw Liren make a critical blunder on the 55th move, allowing Gukesh to secure the win and claim the championship title.

While many celebrated Gukesh’s remarkable achievement, critics such as Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik were quick to point out Liren’s mistake as a game-changing moment. Kramnik went as far as calling the error “child-like,” emphasizing its impact on the match’s outcome. However, legendary Indian chess grandmaster Viswanathan Anand came to Gukesh’s defense, praising the young grandmaster’s consistency and resilience throughout the championship.

In response to Carlsen’s criticisms, Gukesh acknowledged that the games may not have been perfect in quality but maintained that overall, it was a good championship match. The young prodigy also expressed his desire to challenge Carlsen for the title, although the reigning champion has declined the proposition.

Looking ahead, Gukesh has opted to skip the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship to take some time off before returning to competition in 2025. Currently ranked No. 5 in the world according to FIDE rankings, Gukesh is poised to face off against top players like Anand and Carlsen in the upcoming year, solidifying his status as one of the rising stars in the world of chess.
