Chess Legend Viswanathan Anand Draws Fascinating Parallel Between Cricket and Chess as Ravichandran Ashwin Announces Retirement

Chess legend Viswanathan Anand drew a fascinating parallel between cricket and the game of kings as he reflected on the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin, one of cricket’s greats. Anand, known for his strategic thinking and precision on the chessboard, could relate to Ashwin’s decision to step away from the game.

In a chat facilitated by the WestBridge Anand Chess Academy, Anand speculated that Ashwin’s approach to spin bowling may have been influenced by his love for chess. “I like to think that the bowlers in cricket really have to think about how to outfox their opponent. I’m going to even speculate that chess maybe helped Ashwin, but I’m out on a limb here,” Anand said.

Anand, who has faced his own career crossroads, commended Ashwin for his impressive accomplishments on the cricket field. “Your relationship with your sport changes because you don’t play it for the same reasons you played it before. In a sense, it was probably happening for a while but now that you acknowledge it and you are kind of in the state that: That’s where you are,” Anand explained the philosophy of retirement.

The chess genius also shared a recent encounter with Ashwin, describing him as a “really nice person” with a bright future ahead. “He will find new ways of engaging with the game and I wish him all the best,” Anand said.

As Ashwin bids farewell to international cricket, his strategic mind and love for chess have left a lasting impact on the sports world. Fans and fellow athletes alike will surely miss his unique approach to the game.
