Les Rousses, France – Moogi Sahithi Varshini, the trailblazing chess player from Visakhapatnam, has once again made headlines by being named the ‘best woman player’ at the prestigious Juraflore International Chess Tournament. This remarkable achievement adds another feather to her cap as she continues to rise in the world of chess.
Sahithi, who recently earned the title of International Master (IM), faced a formidable lineup of competitors, including several Grandmasters and International Masters from around the globe. Her father and coach, M. Lokeswara Rao, a former national-level player, shared insights into her challenging journey through the nine-round event. “Sahithi faced four International Masters and one Grandmaster, showcasing her skill and determination,” he noted.
With a score of 5 points from 9 rounds, Sahithi not only secured the title but also gained 30 FIDE rating points, elevating her live classical rating from 2264 to an impressive 2294. Among her notable victories were wins against strong Indian International Masters, Subhayan Kundu and Audi Ameya, further solidifying her reputation in the chess community.
Lokeswara Rao expressed optimism about Sahithi’s future, stating, “Her performance should instill confidence, as she is getting closer to earning the prestigious title of Woman Grandmaster.”
Sahithi’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. She was a key member of the Indian women’s team at the Chess Olympiad, where she proudly represented her country and contributed to winning nine international medals. Her accolades also include being ranked the ‘best female’ player in the 2022 Magnus Chess Challenge and finishing as the runner-up in the Biel Grandmasters tournament in Switzerland.
In her earlier years, Sahithi clinched Asian Championship titles in the under-10 and under-12 categories and won gold at the Commonwealth Championship (under-10). With her eyes set on the ultimate goal of becoming a world champion, she remains focused on continuous improvement with each tournament.
After outsmarting former world champion Mariya Muzychuk and the world’s youngest Grandmaster, Abhimanyu Mishra, Sahithi has every reason to dream big. “Becoming the world champion is the ultimate target,” she stated, embodying the spirit of determination and ambition.
